For years, Dig's Nicole Moore's issue with dating was her inability to get a good conversation going. In person and on dating apps, generic questions fizzle out conversations. A “What’s up?” text just isn’t going to cut it.  Luckily, meeting someone on Dig ensures you have a shared interest, aka an obsession with dogs. This commonality is sure to help with breaking the ice.

Learn from Nicole how to overcome shy, awkward feelings on Dig below!

What is your favorite food and what is your dog’s favorite food?
This is a great way to see if your tastes are literally compatible. It also provides a smooth transition into asking your potential date out to a restaurant that caters to their preferences.

As for their pup, bring over his or her favorite snack to score some serious points. That is unless it’s contraband (my friend has a Corgi who is obsessed with M&Ms to a highly dangerous degree) or difficult to obtain (my parent’s dog loves Argentinian tea sandwiches. He’s very classy).

What is your favorite dog-themed movie?
Your date’s favorite dog-themed movie is very telling. If they say Marley and Me, they’re up for a good cry. If they’re more of a Lady and the Tramp kind of person, they are a romantic who will share spaghetti with you. If their answer is The Truth About Cats and Dogs they’re into somewhat obscure 90s rom coms starring Janeane Garofalo and Uma Thurman.

How did you get your dog?
Be prepared for a sweet, swoon-worthy story. You’ll hear all about the first time they laid eyes on their pup and fell madly in love.

Does your dog have a nickname?
Personally, I love the evolution of pets’ nicknames. My dog Ruby is often referred to as Ruby Cat, Rubeus Hagrid, or Reuben Sandwich.

With this question, you’ll get a glimpse into your date’s quirky, silly side.

What are three words that best describe you and your dog?
These three words will give you an overall sense of how your date presents themselves and their dog. With this answer, however brief, you may be able to gauge if you’re compatible with them and more importantly, their furry friend.

For example, I would describe myself as creative, kind, and hardworking, while Ruby’s three words are sweet, stoic, and angry.

What is your biggest pet peeve? What is your pet’s biggest pet peeve?
It’s best to figure out each other’s annoyances as soon as possible. It’s also good to know what upsets their dog.

What was your childhood dog like?
Now, this question may be a bit risky. Your date’s face will either light up as they recount their favorite memories with their first pup or, like me, will start crying. Either way, you’ll get information about their upbringing.

If your date does not own a dog, ask what kind of pupper they would like to have and why. Similarly, you can ask if they have any future plans to get a dog.

Bonus Questions (if you’re feeling brave)
If your dog was in high school which clique would they belong to?
What is your dog’s theme song?
Which United States president does your dog most resemble in both looks and overall energy?
